Award-winning Capsimax® is created using OmniBead™, a beadlet encapsulation technology that delivers the thermogenic power of red hot peppers without the burn. A proprietary formulation, Capsimax encapsulates a highly concentrated and intensely hot natural capsicum fruit extract to provide highly effective levels of active capsaicinoids without the oral and gastric irritation of unprotected red hot peppers.*
Capsimax supplies a scientifically researched concentration of encapsulated red hot peppers that:
- Help manage appetite*
- Support healthy metabolism*
- Help induce thermogenesis (increase in energy expenditure in the body)*
- Support lipoysis*
In animal and human studies, Capsicum and Capsaicinoids have been show to:
- Help manage appetite*
- Support healthy metabolism*
- Help induce thermogenesis (an increase in energy expenditure in the body)*
- Support lipolysis*
Studies on appetite management
While increased metabolic activity often results in increased appetite and caloric consumption, several studies have found that the addition of capsaicinoids to the diet caused a reduction in ad libitum energy intake during subsequent meals. One such study was published in 2001 in the British Journal of Nutrition (Yoshioka, 2001). Subjects consumed 22 grams of hot pepper, providing 66 mg of capsaicinoids, plus 800 mg of caffeine spread out over a 24-hour period. Results show an average negative energy balance compared to the placebo group.
Studies on thermogenesis
Scientists assess whether a substance is thermogenic by monitoring changes in energy expenditure following its ingestion. In a series of human studies conducted at the University of Tsukuba, Japan and Laval University, Canada, energy expenditure increased significantly after subjects ate a meal containing capsicum. (Yoshioka 1995, 1998, 2001).
Another human study was conducted using the proprietary blend in Capsimax Plus. In this double-blind, randomized controlled cross-over study undertaken at a American university, 25 subjects exercised on a treadmill on two occasions. On one occasion, the subjects took Capsimax Plus before exercise, and on the second occasion, they took a placebo. Subjects burned more calories before, during and after exercise when they had taken Capsimax Plus as compared to the placebo.
Studies on body composition and lipolysis
A person's body composition is determined by the ratio of body fat to lean body tissues. Excess body fat, particularly visceral fat that accumulates around the internal organs, increases the risk for heart disease and stroke.
Research has shown that capsaicinoids stimulate a chain of physiological events that aid lipolysis (the breakdown of fat), which can be expected to positively affect body composition (Kawada 1986, 1991). Indeed, animal and human studies have shown capsaicinoids ingestion causes a reduction in the percentage of body fat. In a study published in 2003 in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology, supplements containing capsaicin, green tea extract and chicken essence caused about a one-pound loss in body fat over a two-week period, compared to a placebo (Tsi, 2003).
A human clinical study conducted in 2009 by Dr. Richard Bloomer at the University of Memphis explored the effects of Capsimax on lipolysis and catecholamine secretion. In this randomized, placebo controlled, double-blind, cross-over study, 20 healthy subjects ingesting 100 mg Capsimax (2 mg capsaicinoids) showed significant increases in blood free fatty acids and glycerol at selected times post ingestion, particularly after exercise, compared to placebo controls. Catecholamines (i.e., epinephrine, norepinephrine) were also elevated at various time points post-intake, suggesting stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, though not to the level of statistical significance. Nevertheless, there was no difference in heart rate or blood pressure, compared to controls, and no observed side effects, such as mouth burn, gastric upset, or other discomforts with Capsimax, even after a 12-hour fast. These data suggest that Capsimax safely mobilizes fat metabolism, which has the potential to improve body composition and aid weight management.

Obesity and related health issues are global
Obesity is now an epidemic and the health ramifications are staggering. Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980. Over 200 million men and 300 million women are obese, while over 1.6 billion are overweight. In fact, over 65% of the world population now live in countries where obesity and weight related health concerns kill more people than underweight health concerns. Even countries long associated with thinness are being impacted. In response to this escalation, global weight loss and diet management products, as well as services, totaled over $390 billion in 2010 and is expected to reach $671 billion in 2015 (Marketsandmarkets.com).
Innovation in weight management category has been minimal
Although the problem is ubiquitous and the proposed solutions many, innovation in weight management products has been minimal. While science has made progress understanding weight management difficulties, such as the decline in metabolism associated with a decline in caloric intake, or the increase in appetite and caloric consumption that accompanies an increase in exercise (Cloud, 2009), new science pointing a way to success has been minimal. However, OmniActive has brought innovation in this category through its award-winning line of Capsimax products.
The natural properties of hot red peppers
Capsimax innovation begins with an ingredient source that has been a dietary staple for hundreds of years, hot red peppers. Hot red peppers, known as capsicum, contain a group of compounds called capsaicinoids. Capsaicinoids are what actually cause the “heat” found in hot peppers. The same mechanism that heats up peppers also induces thermogenesis, which ramps up metabolic activity and increases the body’s energy expenditure. And increased thermogenesis is only one of capsicum's weight management benefits. It also helps manage appetite, supports healthy metabolism, helps induce thermogeneis, and supports lipolysis.* Click here for scientific study references.
While the weight management properties of capsicum have been widely recognized, the problem has always been how to deliver the many benefits of hot red peppers without the oral and gastric burn that accompanies this kind of heat.
Breakthrough beadlet technology solves delivery problem
Consuming enough fiery hot capsicum to provide effective weight management benefits is difficult. Without the proper coating, capsicum can cause considerable oral and gastric distress. OmniActive has developed a patented encapsulated form of premium, highly concentrated natural capsicum extract. Using a proprietary matrix of excipients and coatings, Capsimax capsicum extract is delivered through a controlled release mechanism that allows the body to process the extract without oral or gastric irritation.
The outer coating is designed to withstand the highly acidic, low ph levels of the stomach, then releases the capsicum into the higher ph levels of the intestine, where no discomfort is felt. Capsimax breaks down completely in the intestine, which means no discomfort upon voiding.
This proprietary formulation allows consumers to experience all the benefits of non-diluted capsicum extract—with none of the discomfort.
Capsimax technology is available in two ingredient options:
- Capsimax Capsicum Extract
- Capsimax Plus™
For tablets and capsule applications
